The Syrian government’s flag flies on the outskirts of the biggest Syrian Kurdish city, Qamishly.

It lies near the Turkish border between the two rivers, the Euphrates to the west and the Tigris to the east. Most of the land around it is held by Syrian Kurdish forces. But not all.
