“Ladies and gentlemen. President and Mrs Moo-bree-ak!” This was how the new Egyptian leader was introduced at a glittering banquet in the White House. As a young foreign correspondent based in Egypt, I was part of a press entourage with him on his first overseas trip since taking over power from the assassinated Anwar Sadat in 1981.
